Steel coils, as a key product in the steel industry, require strict adherence to standard operating procedures during transportation, storage, and processing to ensure operational safety and product quality. This article details standard handling methods and precautions for steel coils.

I. Handling and Lifting of Steel Coils
Steel coils are heavy and have sharp edges, so lifting operations must be performed using specialized lifting equipment, such as C-hooks, electromagnetic suction cups, or specialized coil clamps. Before lifting, inspect the integrity of the lifting equipment to ensure its load-bearing capacity meets the required coil weight. During lifting, the straps or hooks should be evenly loaded to avoid single-point loads that could cause the coil to tilt or slip. Standing under the coils is strictly prohibited, and lifting should be steady and free of excessive shaking.


II. Storage and Stacking of Steel Coils
Steel coils should be stored horizontally, avoiding vertical or tilted positions to prevent deformation or rolling. When stacking, place wooden pallets or non-slip mats on the bottom layer of coils to prevent rust from moisture. When stacking coils in multiple layers, use wooden blocks between each layer to ensure the stacking height does not exceed safety limits, typically no more than three layers. Furthermore, coils should be kept away from corrosive substances and protected from moisture. Wrap them with rust-proof paper if necessary.

 

III. Coil Uncoiling and Processing

During uncoiling operations, use specialized uncoilers or shearing equipment, ensuring they are adjusted to the appropriate coil width and thickness. Operators should wear protective gloves and goggles to prevent burrs and scratches from the edges. When uncoiling, feed the material slowly to avoid excessive speed that could cause material vibration or damage the equipment. During processing, regularly check tool wear to ensure cutting accuracy.

 

IV. Safety Precautions

Coil handling involves heavy machinery and high-risk activities. Operators must receive professional training and be familiar with the equipment's capabilities and emergency response procedures. Warning signs should be posted at the work site to prevent unauthorized personnel from approaching. Regularly inspect the safety of lifting equipment, storage facilities, and processing machinery to ensure compliance with industry standards.

 

Standardized coil handling not only improves production efficiency but also effectively reduces safety risks, ensuring stable business operations. Industry practitioners should strictly abide by relevant standards to ensure the safety and controllability of the entire process of steel coils from storage to processing.
